Out of work actor Wilson lands a seasonal gig dressing up in a Pooka! suit for in-store appearances promoting this year's hottest toy: the creepy, blank-eyed Pooka! which can repeat what your child says in front of it, sometimes in a chipper voice, sometimes in a scary voice and sometimes not at all. Things seem to be going pretty well for Wilson then: he starts dating single mom Melanie, he makes friends with his neighbor and the Pooka! gig is easy. Before long, however, he starts getting disconcerting flashes, waking up and not remembering what's he's been doing. Plus the Pooka! suit seems to come alive - and it's the scary Pooka - when Wilson is out. He starts experiencing stranger crossovers: the scary Pooka punching the wall and Wilson's hands bleeding; Wilson wearing the good Pooka head while jerking off; Wilson listening through the walls as the bad Pooka kills his neighbor. Or maybe not. Maybe this is all in Wilson's head. He starts to get paranoid and dependent on the suit as things unravel more and more.
Vigalondo displays the same penchant for slow pacing and playing with perception that he did in Timecrimes. The pace did present a challenge for me to stay engaged with Pooka! but ultimately I did enjoy this weird little movie. The twist at the end - similar to Triangle - made me like it more in retrospect. I wouldn't call this a horror movie per se but it's a decent little flick.
